My middle back has been a long-term problem like many people who spend many hours daily on a keyboard (me) or driving a vehicle. It'd get incredibly stiff and painful, I'd get 2 or 3 chiropractic adjustments in a week, and then 3 or 4 weeks later rinse and repeat.

When I moved to Houston, a massage chain opened at the entrance to the neighborhood so I bought a monthly membership. That female masseuse was both strong and mean (to the muscles not me). Weekly visits for about 6 weeks consisting of assisted stretching and then deep tissue massage (i.e. driving elbow multiple angles into the knot). Ultimately, it worked out a softball size knot.

I've continued getting massages on a regular basis and they're not as firm as deep tissue, but they're nothing I could sleep through. I've also improved my ergo posture when on the keyboard which has helped as well.

I don't go, have never had one. My wife has back issues from a car accident and goes monthly to a massage therapist. He was highly recommended by a friend and is booked out for months. I'm not sure what it costs, doesn't matter, helps the wife.

It's been a long time [teenager], but went to spend a couple weeks with my grandmother.
She scheduled me 2 massages at her salon. A standard massage, and a water massage.

Both were fantastic, would do again if I have the inclination.
Instead, I just get one scheduled for my wife. She just hasn't gotten around to using it.

I go with the wife occasionally for a deep tissue massage. I want to crawl out of my skin when they start digging in to my calf or middle back muscles but they are worth it

My lower back gets tight but usually gets better after 2 or 3 days. A few years ago it was sore for 10 days and I went and got a couple of massages. It helped but then I figured out my mattress was 15 years old and was causing the problem. Got a new high end mattress and felt better immediately.

Don't overlook this aspect as you should go to your first massage with realistic expectations. A sports or deep tissue massage will not be like having your wife rub your shoulders. It will be intense at first; just let them do their thing and you'll get results that last far longer than the 1 hour massage.

The best result I had was from a masseuse/PT/Pilates trainer who worked with athletes. (She went from the NFL to working mostly with retired athletes).

She made real progress. I would combine massage with PT and Pilates/yoga.

I use masseuses from Thailand at the Thai Massage Society in Sterling, VA). They are trained in all manner of massage therapy, and the deep tissue massage I am leaving for in 30 minutes was my 65th birthday present to myself.

I usually leave in the condition of rice vermicelli that soaked too long. I'm looking forward to it.

Regularly. Lifting weights, it’s almost necessary. They walk on my back, hamstrings, calves. Gets all the knots out. It’s painful during. If it isn’t, they aren’t doing it right and it’s fu fu. It should hurt.
